Using LPG in Winter: Performance and Savings in Cold Weather

When the weather turns cold a few questions appear on the agenda of LPG vehicle owners. Why does the car not switch to gas straight away in the mornings? Why does consumption rise somewhat in winter? Will I damage the system in the cold?

All the answers lead to the same place: LPG turning from liquid into gas requires heat. Winter is the season in which obtaining that heat becomes harder.

Why Does the System Start on Petrol?

LPG sits in the tank in liquid form. It has to reach the engine as a gas. The part that carries out this conversion is called the vaporiser.

The vaporiser takes the heat it needs for this job from the engine's coolant. So if the engine is still cold when the vehicle starts running, the vaporiser is cold too and cannot turn LPG into gas adequately.

This is why every LPG system runs on petrol until the engine reaches a certain temperature. Once the temperature threshold is passed the system switches to gas on its own.

This is not a shortcoming but the design itself. A system forced onto gas while cold runs roughly and puts strain on its components.

What this means in winter: because the engine warms up more slowly, the time to switch to gas gets longer. A transition that happens in a minute or two in summer can take several minutes in winter. On short journeys the vehicle can appear to be running almost entirely on petrol.

The Short Distance Problem

This is the situation met most often in winter and it affects savings directly.

A vehicle doing two three-kilometre journeys a day may not find enough time in the winter months for the engine to reach switching temperature. The result is that although the vehicle has LPG it runs mainly on petrol, and the driver says "I can't make any savings".

There are a few things that can be done:

  • Combining short journeys where possible and driving for longer in one go helps.
  • Normal maintenance items that speed up engine warm-up (such as a healthy thermostat) have a direct effect here.
  • Warming the vehicle up at idle for a long time is not an efficient method; the engine warms up faster under load.

In mainly long distance use this problem does not arise in the first place.

The Propane and Butane Question

LPG sold as autogas is a mixture of propane and butane. These two gases behave differently in the cold.

Propane can remain in gas form at much lower temperatures. Butane struggles to vaporise at temperatures close to zero.

This is why distribution companies raise the proportion of propane in the mixture during the winter months. The aim is to maintain sufficient vapour pressure inside the tank in cold weather.

The practical result for the driver is this: buying fuel regularly from known stations during the winter months directly affects cold performance. Fuel left over with a summer mixture can cause difficulty starting in hard frosts.

Why Does Consumption Rise in Winter?

A rise in consumption is observed in LPG vehicles in winter. But most of this is not specific to LPG; the same happens in petrol vehicles.

Let us list the reasons:

A cold engine runs on a richer mixture. Consumption is high during the time it takes to warm up. In winter that time is longer.

Air density rises. Cold air is denser, the engine takes in more oxygen in the same volume and asks for more fuel in return.

Electrical consumers are in use. The rear screen heater, seat heaters, headlights, blower — all of them load the engine through the alternator.

Tyre pressure drops. As the air contracts in the cold the pressure falls and rolling resistance rises. Checking the pressure regularly makes a visible difference.

The additional factor specific to LPG: the longer switching time increases the period spent on petrol.

Does Cold Damage the System?

In a correctly installed system, no. LPG systems are designed to work in Türkiye's winter conditions.

Even so there are two points to watch.

Water and moisture. Moisture that accumulates in the system can freeze in hard frosts and restrict gas flow. The way to prevent this is not to neglect filter maintenance.

Filter blockage. A dirty filter causes far more obvious problems in the cold. A blockage that goes unnoticed through the summer can show itself as rough running in winter.

Both are situations that can be prevented with routine maintenance. A check before winter is the simplest way to get through the season without trouble.

Pre-Winter Checklist

Items worth having looked at by an authorised service before the cold sets in:

  • The condition of the gas filter and its replacement if needed
  • Checking the vaporiser and coolant line connections
  • The general condition of the engine cooling system and the antifreeze level
  • Checking the gas pressure values
  • A leak check on the system's hoses and connections

These checks fall within the LPG system's own maintenance scope and can be carried out together with the vehicle's periodic service.

How Does 2A Prime Behave in Cold Weather?

2A Prime systems were developed to work consistently across different road, load and temperature conditions.

What this means in cold weather is this: the system works according to real time data, including gas temperature and pressure, rather than a fixed calibration table. When the density of the gas changes in the cold, the calculation is updated accordingly.

The decision to switch is not tied to a single temperature value either; vaporiser temperature, gas pressure and engine revs are evaluated together. The aim is for the system not to switch before it is ready.

In Summary

Most of what happens when using LPG in winter is not a fault but physics. The vaporiser needs heat; because the engine warms up late the switch to gas is delayed; cold weather raises consumption in any case.

The most effective things you can do are simple: do not neglect filter maintenance, buy fuel from stations you trust during the winter months, check tyre pressures and combine short journeys where possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

In very cold weather the car never switches to LPG, is there a fault?

If the engine cannot reach switching temperature this is expected behaviour. It is met often in winter on short journeys. If the switch does not happen on long drives either, the vaporiser, the coolant line or the temperature sensor needs checking.

Should I park the car in a garage?

It is not necessary. LPG systems are designed to withstand winter conditions outdoors. Use of enclosed car parks depends on local regulations and the rules of the facility; you need to confirm this with the operator concerned.

Does filling the tank completely cause problems in winter?

For safety reasons LPG tanks are not filled to full capacity; the system stops automatically at a certain fill level. This is to leave room for the gas to expand with temperature and applies regardless of the season.

What should I do if I am not going to use the vehicle for a long time?

If you are going to leave the vehicle standing for a long period, it is enough on your return to start it on petrol and wait for it to switch to gas once the engine has warmed up. Having a system check carried out at the first opportunity after a long standstill is also useful.

Does the gas run out faster in winter?

The tank volume does not change, but because consumption generally rises in the cold and the time spent on petrol is longer, it can feel as though the gas tank empties more quickly. This is the effect of the season, not of the system.

What has the antifreeze level got to do with LPG?

The vaporiser takes its heat from the engine's coolant. If there is a shortcoming in the cooling system the vaporiser cannot warm up sufficiently and the switch to gas is delayed. The antifreeze level and the general condition of the cooling system therefore directly affect LPG performance.

The rolling resistance of winter tyres is somewhat higher than that of summer tyres and this is reflected in consumption. The effect is the same in both fuel modes and is not specific to LPG.
