What Is a Hydrogen (H2) Compressor and How Does It Differ from a CNG Compressor?

Gas compressors make it possible to store and transport a gas by reducing its volume and raising its pressure. When hydrogen (H2) is involved, this work brings requirements that differ from those of natural gas. In this article we summarise in general terms what a hydrogen compressor is and where it differs from a CNG compressor.

What Is a Hydrogen Compressor?

A hydrogen compressor is the equipment that compresses hydrogen gas to high pressure. Because hydrogen has a very low density under atmospheric conditions, carrying a usable amount of energy in a reasonable volume requires high pressure.

For this reason the operating pressures in hydrogen applications go above those of familiar gas applications.

The Difference from a CNG Compressor

Both pieces of equipment do the work of compressing gas, but the properties of the gas itself call for different design decisions.

Molecule size. The hydrogen molecule is very small. On the sealing side this calls for a more sensitive design than natural gas requires.

Material selection. Hydrogen can affect the mechanical properties of certain metals over time. The material used on contact surfaces has to be chosen to suit this condition.

Operating pressure. The pressure levels targeted in hydrogen applications are above the levels usual in CNG applications.

Where Is It Used?

Hydrogen compressors appear at every stage where hydrogen has to be moved from the point where it is produced to the point where it is used. Storage facilities, filling stations and industrial plants where hydrogen is used as a process gas are the main areas of use.

Common Ground

Despite the differences there are also common topics between the two. Explosive atmosphere classification, the use of ex-proof electrical equipment, compliance with pressure vessel legislation and periodic inspection requirements apply on both sides.

Holding certificates that comply with the legislation of the country where the equipment is located is a condition sought regardless of the type of gas.

When Making a Selection

When a gas compressor is being selected, the type of gas, the targeted operating pressure, the flow requirement and the operating conditions of the facility are evaluated together. Selecting equipment before these points are clear does not give the right result.
