The majority of petrol cars sold in the last fifteen years have direct injection engines. When the owners of these vehicles look into LPG conversion they mostly meet contradictory answers: some say "it can't be done, it will burn the engine", others say "it can, it makes no difference".

Both are incomplete. The correct answer is this: it can be done, but with a system designed specifically for this engine architecture.

What Is Direct Injection?

In conventional petrol engines the fuel is sprayed into the intake manifold and mixes with air before entering the cylinder. This is called multi point injection (MPI).

In direct injection (DI) engines the petrol never passes through the intake manifold. A high pressure pump sprays the fuel straight into the combustion chamber. This provides far more precise control over when and how much fuel is delivered. The result: more power from the same displacement, lower consumption and better emission figures.

This is the core technology behind carmakers' move to downsized turbocharged engines. Designations such as TSI, TFSI, GDI, T-GDI, EcoBoost and THP are common examples of this family.

So Where Is the Problem?

The problem has to do with where the petrol injectors sit.

In MPI engines the injector is located in the intake port, a relatively cool area. In DI engines the tip of the injector is directly inside the combustion chamber — that is, at a point exposed to combustion temperature on every cycle.

How do these injectors withstand that heat? Thanks to the petrol passing through them. As the fuel flows through the injector it cools it. The flow of fuel over the injector is what prevents the risk.

Now consider this: you have switched the vehicle entirely to LPG. The petrol injectors are out of use and no fuel flows through them. But the injector is still inside the combustion chamber and the engine is still running.

The injector tip, with its cooling cut off, overheats. Deposits form on it over time, the spray pattern deteriorates and at an advanced stage the injector itself can be damaged. This is not LPG harming the engine — it is the loss of the cooling the injector needs by design.

The Solution: Not Cutting Petrol Off

This is why LPG systems designed for direct injection engines do not cut petrol off completely. They maintain a controlled flow of petrol, enough to protect the injectors. The rest of the fuel demand is met with LPG.

Different technical approaches exist in the sector, but this is the most widely used method today.

A very important conclusion follows from this: in DI systems the quality of a product is measured by how little petrol it needs to provide that protection.

If a system spends more petrol than necessary to protect the injectors, the economic point of switching to LPG diminishes. The entire engineering value of the system lies in meeting both requirements at once: the injector stays safe, but petrol consumption is held at the lowest possible level.

2A Prime DI was developed on exactly this balance. The system determines the minimum petrol flow required by reading the engine's instantaneous load, revs and temperature, and updates it continuously according to conditions rather than to a fixed ratio.

What Happens If an MPI System Is Fitted?

A situation we meet often: owners of direct injection vehicles who have had a standard sequential system built for MPI fitted to their car.

These systems do not have the logic to manage petrol flow, because no such need exists in their own design assumptions. The result is usually this: the system cuts the petrol off, the injectors are left without cooling, and the problem appears not on the first day but months later. That also makes diagnosis harder; the driver may not associate the problem with LPG.

This is why one question must be answered clearly before conversion: is this vehicle direct injection or not?

Working Out Which Group Your Vehicle Is In

The engine code usually gives a strong clue. Designations such as TSI, FSI, TFSI, GDI, T-GDI, CGI, EcoBoost and THP mostly point to direct injection families.

But there is a point to watch here: versions with different injection types can exist under the same commercial name. Some engine families also use dual injection arrangements in which direct and multi point injection are used together. So the inference "this engine is called TSI, therefore it is DI" is correct most of the time but not always certain.

What Should You Expect After Conversion?

In a conversion carried out with the right system and the right calibration, the following are expected:

  • The engine runs on petrol while cold and switches automatically to LPG once warm.
  • There is no loss of power in LPG mode that the driver would notice.
  • The petrol spent on injector protection is at a level low enough not to create a visible drop in the tank.
  • The vehicle's own fault warnings are not triggered.

If something unexpected occurs, it usually stems from the choice of product or from calibration. That is why having the installation carried out by a trained authorised service is as decisive as the product itself.

In Summary

LPG can be fitted to a direct injection vehicle. But the answer to "can it be fitted" cannot be considered separately from "with which system".

In these engines the critical point is protecting the petrol injectors, and that protection is provided by a controlled flow of petrol. A good system provides it with the least petrol possible. A standard system produced for MPI is not suitable for the job.

The time varies according to the vehicle and the tank type chosen. In direct injection vehicles the calibration stage can require extra time, because setting the petrol flow to the right level calls for a test drive. Can I leave the petrol tank empty after conversion?

No. In direct injection vehicles the system continuously needs a small amount of petrol in order to protect the injectors. When the petrol runs out the system protects itself and cannot continue running in LPG mode. There must always be a certain level of petrol in the tank.

Can I disable the system and use petrol only?

Yes. You can switch to petrol mode using the switch on the console. The vehicle continues to run as it did before conversion; when the LPG system is not engaged it does not interfere with the running of the engine.

What happens if I have it fitted at a service that is not authorised?

Even if the product is the same, the result will not be. In direct injection systems calibration is the step that determines the balance between injector protection and consumption, and this setting has to be made specifically for the vehicle. In addition, the legal documents for the conversion can only be issued by authorised services.
