
An LPG dispenser is one of the continuously working pieces of equipment at a station. Its measurement accuracy and its safety depend directly on the condition of the parts on it. In this article we summarise which parts an LPG dispenser contains and what is looked at during maintenance.
The box housing the dispenser filter has an inlet and an outlet valve. The filter has both a 10 micron special filter paper and metal protection. It holds back foreign matter entering the system; because it restricts flow once it becomes dirty, it is one of the first parts that needs to be checked periodically.
The meter is the device that measures the amount of liquid LPG passing through the dispenser. It works with four pistons and has a measurement accuracy of 0.5 per cent. All of its parts are built on the lego principle, so parts can be replaced easily and at low cost. The crank mechanism is forged steel.
It is recommended that the measurement accuracy of the meter is checked twice a year within the standard service period. This check is carried out with master meter devices.
The dispenser hose must comply with LPG standards, must not dissolve or deteriorate on a liquid or vapour basis and must be resistant to high pressure. Hoses must comply with EN 1762. The hose must also have a conductive wire or weave, which matters in preventing static electricity that may arise during refuelling.
At the end of the hose an Italian filling type T3 nozzle, an acme type nozzle or a cylinder filling nozzle can be used.
The electronic unit of the dispenser works in the range of 120-280 volts at 50-60 Hz and retains data for 72 hours. Connection to automation can be made over RS-232, LAN or USB.
The pulser, which works integrated with the meter, transfers the amount of LPG delivered to the vehicle and the corresponding price to the screen. Excess current draw by the solenoid valves is prevented by a separate fuse, relay and varistor arrangement.
The ATC device calculates the expansion in the unit volume of LPG according to the temperature difference and applies a volume correction. Both the ATC probe and its connection to the electronic unit must be sealed, so work relating to the ATC is carried out by an authorised service.
The use of ex-proof certified metal cable glands in the dispenser is an important detail for safety. A safety valve and a drain valve are needed against the possibility of water mixing into the product. The system stops operating when it does not see LPG flow, and in situations such as a hose rupture it detects the sudden increase in flow rate and cuts the flow automatically.
A periodic check covers the condition of the filter, the tightness of hoses and connections, gas pressure values and the measurement accuracy of the meter. If parts need replacing, parts suited to the dispenser's own components should be used; because the control unit makes its calculations knowing the behaviour of the meter and the valves, components not designed for one another reduce the efficiency of the system.
